US Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle visits Hellenic Olympic Committee – Receives symbolic Olympic Torch
United States Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle paid an official visit to the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC), marking the first such visit by a US Ambassador and highlighting the strong ties between the two nations ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Ambassador Guilfoyle was warmly received at the HOC headquarters by Secretary General Stefanos Chandakas. She was welcomed by HOC President Isidoros Kouvelos, who emphasized the historic significance of the meeting.
“This is the first time a United States Ambassador to Greece has officially visited the Hellenic Olympic Committee,” said President Kouvelos. He noted the deep bonds shared by the two countries through the values of sport — excellence, friendship, respect, and unity — and expressed confidence that the Los Angeles 2028 Games will further strengthen Greece-US cooperation within the Olympic family.
The meeting was also attended by Petros Synadinos, Head of Mission of Team Hellas for LA 2028, and Thomas Tokas, President of the Hellenic Olympic Torch Relay Committee.
Mr. Synadinos briefed the Ambassador on the progress of Greek preparations for the 2028 Olympics, while Mr. Tokas outlined plans for the Olympic Torch Relay, which will start with the traditional lighting of the flame in Ancient Olympia before traveling to Los Angeles.
In a highly symbolic gesture, President Isidoros Kouvelos presented Ambassador Guilfoyle with a torch from the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games. The gift symbolizes the journey of the Olympic flame from its ancient birthplace in Greece to the 2028 host city, serving as a token of friendship and shared commitment to the Olympic Movement.
The visit took place in a warm and constructive atmosphere, underscoring both countries’ dedication to closer collaboration on the road to Los Angeles 2028.
