Important Milestones in the History of the Olympic Games

776 B.C.

Τhe Beginning

The first recorded celebration of the Olympic Games took place in Ancient Olympia. Although it is certain that this was not the first time the games were held, this year remains a historic anniversary of the Olympic Games.

1896

The Revival

In 1894, it was unanimously decided to revive the Olympic Games and hold them every four years in a different country. The first official event was held as an honorary tribute in Athens in 1896.

1924

The first Winter Olympic Games

In 1921, the IOC decided to organize the "Winter Sports Week" and establish the Winter Olympics. The first Winter Olympic Games were held in Chamonix, France, from January 25 to February 5, 1924.

1936

The First Torch Relay

In 1936, the Lighting of the Olympic Flame Ceremony and the Torch Relay were introduced for the first time in Ancient Olympia. Since then, the Flame has traveled to the location of each respective Summer and Winter Olympic Games.

2004

The Return

A milestone year, as the 28th modern Olympic Games will be held in Greece again, after 108 years.

2024

The Evolution

The Olympic Games return to the country of Pierre de Coubertin, 100 years after the last Olympics in Paris (1924), and the French capital is preparing to host the biggest sporting event once again.
