Hellenic Olympic Committee launches major upgrade and restoration works at the Panathenaic Stadium

The Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) has launched an extensive programme of restoration and upgrade works at the Panathenaic Stadium, the iconic monument of Greek sport and Olympism, with the aim of preserving and further enhancing its historic and cultural significance.

The first phase of the project involves the complete replacement of the athletics track surface, which, after many years of continuous use for major sporting events and daily training sessions, had suffered significant wear. The new German-manufactured track will feature the colours of the Greek flag and is certified by World Athletics for Diamond League-level competitions.

The works, fully funded by Capital Maritime & Trading Corp., owned by Evangelos Marinakis, extend well beyond the track replacement. Immediately after the installation of the new track, an extensive cleaning of the Panathenaic Stadium’s marble surfaces will be carried out with the utmost respect for the monument’s historical character, further highlighting the timeless beauty and unique architectural heritage of the world’s only stadium built entirely of white marble.

In addition, a new state-of-the-art lighting system will be installed, significantly enhancing both the functionality and the aesthetics of the Stadium while providing improved conditions for athletes, visitors and the hosting of major international sporting events.

HOC President Isidoros Kouvelos commented on the commencement of the works:

“For the first time in its history, the Hellenic Olympic Committee is delivering a project of such national importance through the generosity of Greek benefactors, in this case Evangelos Marinakis, without any financial support from the State. The restoration and upgrade of the historic Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympic Games were held, will enable the venue to host a Diamond League athletics meeting in 2027. Preserving our heritage must always remain a top priority. Through these projects, the Hellenic Olympic Committee reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting, upgrading and promoting the unique stadium in the world that is built entirely of white marble.”
