Bronze medal, August 18, 2016, 470. Rio 2016

The Greek flag was held high in Rio by Takis Mantis and Pavlos Kayalis, who gave Greek sailing its first medal in the Olympic Games after 8 years. The Greek sailors finished 10th in the 470 medal race, eventually climbing to the third step of the podium, behind Croatians Sime Fantela/Igor Marenic, who took first place, and Australians Matthew Belcher and Will Ryan, who ended up celebrating the silver medal. The Greek team was far behind Australia in the beginning, but took the lead in the third point, but could not keep it and had to settle for the bronze medal in the end, which is still a great success for our country.

They said..

“It was a very difficult race, we tried to keep the Australian behind us, we fought as best we could, we gave our best, you can not forget that he was a winner in London and world champion, we have a score to settle now. We are proud, it is the confirmation of a job that took a lot of effort and planning.”
