Silver medal, April 7, 1896, Miltiadis Gouskos, shot put. Athens 1896

Athletes performed their thrusts through a square frame that was essentially the first shot put valve. The qualifying mark for the final was set at 10.00. The American Robert Garrett, 22 years old, student, son of a banking family from Baltimore, entered the competition with excellent psychology. A day earlier he had also won first place in the discus throw and wanted to get a second victory. He finally succeeded with his first shot at 11.22, the only one to surpass Miltiadis Gouskos of Zakynthos, and he celebrated his success vigorously at the end.

The Greek champion had a best of 11.03, and although he fought to the end, he was unable to overtake Garrett.

The final ranking: Garrett (USA) 11.22 Gouskos (Greece) 11.03 Papasideris (Greece) 10.36 Jensen (Denmark)
