Dimitris Golemis
Bronze medal, April 9, 1896, Dimitris Golemis, 800 m. Athens 1896.
In the Panhellenic Championships, which also served as a qualifying competition for the Olympic Games, Dimitris Golemis of AO Athens finished second to Angelos Fetsis. But in the final of the Olympic Games only Golemis got the qualification pass, who finished second again with a performance of 2.16.8 against 2.16.6 of the winner Albin Lermusiaux from France. The best performance of the qualifiers was 2.10 by the Australian Edwin Flack, a cashier by profession who had come to Athens on vacation. On the day of the final, only three of the four qualified runners competed. Lermusiaux was absent because he wanted to save his strength for the marathon race. Flack won in the final meters ahead of Hungary’s Nandor Dani with a time of 2.11.0 to 2.11.8. Dimitris Golemis followed far behind in third place with a time of 2.28.0, a performance that is not fully verified, however.
The final results: Flack (Australia) 2.11.0 Dani (Hungary) 2.11.8 Golemis (Greece) 2.28.0.
