The flame of the Olympic Games “Paris 2024” ended on Sunday evening in Thessaloniki with the conclusion of the sixth day of the torch relay organized by the Hellenic Olympic Committee.

The altar in Nea Paralia next to the statue of Alexander the Great and the “umbrellas” of the great sculptor Giorgos Zongolopoulos was lit by Olympian Tasoula Kelesidou together with the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Stelios Angeloudis

Earlier, the Olympic light had passed the Olympic Museum of Thessaloniki and the Square of Asia Minor Culture in Toumba, where ceremonies were held in the presence of numerous people who applauded the Olympic light. The French Ambassador to Greece was also present to the ceremony.

Among the torchbearers were Olympic champion Voula Patoulidou, Olympic wrestling champion Artyom Kouregian, former national basketball player Nikos Zisis, former national basketball coach Efthymis Kiumourtzoglou and many other athletes.

The torch relay on day 6 began in Volos and passed the Ancient Theater of Larissa. It then went to Trikala, where the welcoming ceremony took place at the Asklepios Bridge over the Lithea River, where the European pole vault champion Christos Papanikolaou, aged 82, lit the altar and was idolized by hundreds of people from Trikala. Christos Papanikolaou had received the flame from the president of the Hellenic Athletics Federation and javelin world champion Sofia Sakorafa.

A large crowd also gathered in Kalambaka, where the altar was lit by former national basketball player Efthimis Renzias, so that the Olympic flame symbolically passed through Meteora and stopped for a while in front of the Holy Monastery of Megalo Meteoros – Transfiguration of the Savior.

On Monday, April 22, the seventh day of the Olympic Torch Relay, the symbol of Olympism will travel from Thessaloniki through the ancient theater of Philippi, Kavala, Xanthi, Komotini and finally to Alexandroupoli.
