Gold medal, Stefanos Douskos, July 30, 2021, Men’s Single Sculls. Tokyo 2020

Stefanos Douskos was crowned Olympic champion in the single sculls at the 32nd Olympic Games of Tokyo 2020. The rower from Ioannina won the first medal for Greece which was in fact gold, and the first gold medal of Greek rowing in the Olympic Games history. With a time of 6:40.45 and an incredible race, Stefanos Douskos also set an Olympic record, breaking that of Mahe Drisdale (6:41.34) from Rio Olympics in 2016.

In the final race, the 24-year-old Stefanos Douskos crossed the 1,000 meters first and had not relinquished the lead since, steadily climbing to the… top step of the podium.

They said..

“I was thinking about getting a medal. I saw that I was in fourth place at 800 meters, and I made a change and tried to stay in front. My coach and I said to try and be in the top three leading crews. Then I went to the front and tried to hold off my competitors, and I’m very happy I did that. I gave everything, all the training I did, and the effort paid off! In the last meters, all I could think about was the medal and I said to myself: gold!”
