Results of the EU-funded project OCEAN

After two and a half years (1/1/23-30/6/25), the EU-funded project “Olympic Committees of Europe Approaching Carbon Neutrality-OCEAN” was successfully completed. The project brought together 18 National Olympic Committees (Partners), including the Hellenic Olympic Committee, as well as the German Öko Institut, specialized in sustainability and climate change issues, under the coordination of the European Olympic Committees EU Office (EOC EU Office).

Through the implementation of the project and with the support of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Associaton of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), the first global, free of charge carbon footprint measurement tool, specifically designed for sports organizations was developed; the OCEAN Sport CO₂ Calculator.

By using the OCEAN Sport CO₂ Calculator, sports organizations are automatically able to:

  • calculate carbon emissions related to energy consumption, staff and spectator transportation, events, procurement etc.
  • identify the main sources of carbon emissions
  • select measures to reduce carbon footprint
  • align with the reporting requirements of the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework
