Capital Maritime & Trading Corp., Gold Sponsor of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, Undertakes the Renovation of the Panathenaic Stadium

The Hellenic Olympic Committee is proud to announce the establishment of a strategic partnership with Capital Maritime & Trading Corp. and its chairman and founder, Mr. Evangelos Marinakis, as Gold Sponsor of the HOC.

The historic monument that was reconstructed in the 19th century for the revival of the first modern Olympic Games by national benefactor Georgios Averof is now set to return to its original purpose, thanks to the generous support of Mr. Evangelos Marinakis — a committed supporter of sport who contributes in a meaningful and selfless manner, without seeking any reciprocal benefit.

As part of this collaboration, Capital Maritime & Trading Corp. will finance and carry out the comprehensive renovation of the Panathenaic Stadium, upgrading its infrastructure so that the iconic venue can once again host international athletics competitions at Diamond League level, in full compliance with all contemporary standards.

The project includes the installation of a new track surface meeting all international Diamond League specifications, as well as the replacement of the existing lighting system with state-of-the-art LED fixtures. The new lighting will enhance the beauty of the Panathenaic Stadium while significantly reducing energy consumption and minimizing environmental impact. Beyond its functional purpose, it will also create an illuminated nighttime route that highlights the history of the revival of the Olympic Games, offering a distinctive experience for Greek and international visitors.

In addition, Mr. Marinakis will sponsor the illumination of the façade of the Hellenic Olympic Committee headquarters on Kifissias Avenue, through a lighting design by the internationally acclaimed Greek lighting designer Eleftheria Deko, renowned for her work on the Acropolis and who has undertaken this project. The lighting scheme incorporates several innovative concepts by Ms. Deko and is expected to bring light, culture, and a contemporary aesthetic to the city.

Commenting on the renovation of the Panathenaic Stadium, Mr. Marinakis stated:

“The Panathenaic Stadium is far more than a sporting venue. It is a symbol of timeless Greek ideals — fair competition, sportsmanship, and friendship among peoples. These values were born in ancient Greece, were revived with the first modern Olympic Games of 1896 in this very stadium and continue to inspire the world today. Our goal is to support this monument over the long term and keep it alive, reminding us that sport is not merely an event, but a continuation of values, history, and inspiration for future generations.”

The President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, Mr. Isidoros Kouvelos, stated:

“Evangelos Marinakis is a true man of sport who has consistently and generously supported every initiative that promotes its core values. A devoted supporter of the Olympic ideal and the power of sport, he continues to contribute in a meaningful and lasting way, both through the renovation of the Panathenaic Stadium, which will be able to host major international athletics competitions, and through his support of athletes and initiatives requested by the Hellenic Olympic Committee. He is a sponsor without time or financial limitations, who seeks no reciprocal benefit and demonstrates through his actions his genuine commitment to Greek sport and Olympic education. The Hellenic Olympic Committee extends its sincere gratitude for his ongoing and invaluable contribution.”

A few days earlier, the support of world champion wrestler Giorgos Kougioumtsidis was also announced, once again by Mr. Evangelos Marinakis, through ALTER EGO Media.
