Hellenic Olympic Committee hosts International Workshop on Good Governance in Sport

A high-level Awareness Raising Workshop on Good Governance in Sport took place at the headquarters of the Hellenic Olympic Committee in Athens, with the support of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs & Sport of the Hellenic Republic.

Bringing together international and national stakeholders, the event aimed to raise awareness on the importance of transparency, integrity, and accountability in sport governance. Organized in collaboration with the Council of Europe’s Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the workshop focused on the role of the International Partnership Against Corruption in Sport (IPACS) and its governance benchmark and guidelines.

The workshop opened with welcome remarks by George Mavrotas, Secretary General of Sport, and Stefanos Chandakas, Secretary General of the Hellenic Olympic Committee. Key contributions were made by Sophie Kwasny, Executive Secretary of EPAS, and Camila Tort, Ethics Compliance & Governance Manager at the IOC.

Participants explored the mission, structure, and initiatives of IPACS, with a deep dive into the five governance dimensions: Transparency, Integrity, Democracy, Development & Solidarity, and Checks & Balances / Control Mechanisms. A thematic session highlighted the significance of implementing effective control mechanisms in sports organizations.

The workshop concluded with an open discussion session, encouraging the exchange of experiences and best practices among participants. Closing remarks were delivered by Mr. Mavrotas, Mr. Dimosthenis Tampakos, two-time olympic medalist, HOC member and President of the National Olympic Academy of Greece and Mr. Kostis Liarommatis, HOC member and Chair of the HOC Sports and Environment Commission.

This event marked another step in the ongoing commitment of the Hellenic Olympic Committee to promoting good governance and ethical standards in sport at national and international levels.
