Spyros Capralos’ term as the International Olympic Committee’s member renewed until 2029

The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided to renew the term of Spyros Capralos, President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, as an IOC member for Greece. The decision was made during the board’s latest meeting in Lausanne.

The proposal for Mr. Capralos’ term extension will be put to a vote at the 144th Session of the IOC, scheduled to take place in Greece from March 18 to 21, 2025. It is widely expected to gain approval from the majority of IOC members.

Originally set to conclude at the end of 2025, Mr. Capralos’ term was extended in recognition of his significant contributions to the Olympic and global sports movements. His leadership and key interventions on critical issues affecting both Olympic Committees and athletes were noted as instrumental. The renewed term will run from January 1, 2026, through the end of 2029.

Since becoming an independent member of the IOC in 2019, Mr. Capralos has been a driving force in promoting Olympic values. Reflecting on the board’s decision, he remarked:

“I am truly honored by the Executive Board’s proposal to extend my term as a member of the International Olympic Committee. This recognition highlights the efforts I have made to advance Olympic values and strengthen the Olympic movement globally. It also serves as a tribute to Greek sports and our athletes, ensuring that Greece retains a strong and influential presence within the Olympic family’s decision-making processes. This renewal inspires me to work even harder to support Greek athletes and their endeavors.”
