At the age of 36, in the last race of his career, Spyros Gianniotis wonthe only medal that was still missing in his huge collection. With a sensational finish in the last 500 meters, Spyros Gianniotis climbed to the podium of the Olympic Games, losing the gold in a photo finish to Dutchman Feery Weertman by one hand ! The Greek champion crossed the imaginary finish line while his Dutch competitor hit the sign first after both achieved a time of 1.52.59.8. The race was sensational, as only the photo finish after 10 km (!) decided the first place, but also the third, as three athletes finished together and the Frenchman Olivier was finally the lucky one.
