Gold medal, August 20, 2016, pole vault. Rio 2016

Katerina Stefanidis made history, finishing first in the pole vault after a sensational final, giving Greece its 6th medal in Rio, the first in the sport and the first gold in athletics since 2004! The Greek champion flew over 4.85 and to the top of the world, lifting Greece into the air with her! She traveled to Rio as a favorite for the first place and will return to Greece with the gold medal in her luggage! Katerina Stefanidis took the lead in the pole vault final with 4.85m. The Greek champion had a tough fight with Morris (USA), both showed the same performance, but with more valid attempts Katerina won the gold medal. McCartney from New Zealand was ranked in the 3rd place with 4.80.

“I haven’t realized it yet. I wanted 4.90, but I didn’t make it. I thought Sandy was going to jump over the top and take gold, but I saw my husband jump on the field. I avoid looking at the other athletes’ performances from this year because I’m influenced by it. I heard them celebrating and I didn’t know what happened. I’m very happy. I still can’t believe it.”
