Bronze medal, July 29, 1980, Tasos Boutouris, Tasos Gavrilis, Aristides Rapanakis, cat. Soling, Moscow 1980.

Nine boats participated in the regatta, but the competition, especially for the medals, was extremely tough and long. The Greek sailors had a bad start in the first races, but then there was a clear improvement from race to race. Until the final, there were even hopes for the gold medal, as no one had established a clear lead. In the end, Greece took the bronze medal, very close to the top two, while the Danes celebrated their second gold in two consecutive competitions.

The ranking: Denmark (Jensen, Bandolowski, Hansen) 23.0 points S.Union (M. Budnikov, A. Budnikov, Polyakov) 30.4 Greece (Boudouris, Gavrilis, Rapanakis) 31.1 A. Germany (Below, Klenke, Zahries) 37.4 Netherlands (G. Bakker, S. Bakker, Coster) 45.0 Brazil (B. Brun, G. Brun, Souza) 47.1 Switzerland (Corminboeuf, Guignard, Perret) 71.7 Sweden (G. Anderson, G. Anderson, Larsson) 75.7.

They said..

Tasos Boutouris: “When we went to Moscow, our minds was set in winning a medal. That was my mentality too, always aiming high and why not a gold medal. I remember thinking I would win a medal for sure. I think the gold medal was taken away from us due to an appeal that we had nothing to do with and we dropped to 3rd place. The night after the awards ceremony we celebrated our success with a feast, an incredible moment. If we had prepared better, because at that time there was only a rudimentary infrastructure, we might have been able to achieve something much greater.”
